Research Interests

I am interested in the appliance of psychology to real life performance problems.
My main focus is on three broad areas:
(a) risk taking (b) the psychological impact of exercise (c) mental toughness.

The risk taking research is focussed on the impact of moods/emotion on risk taking behaviour. I am particular interested in the impact of failure/success on subsequent risk taking behaviour. In regard to physical exercise and psychological well being, my approach has been to try to put the claimed benefits within a wider context. For example does exercise bring more benefits than a sedentary activity? Our research seems to show that many activities can bring the same, or more, psychological benefits than exercise. I think this is particularly important as the "over-selling of exercise" may be a factor in the low adherence rates. Finally, my interest in mental toughness stems from working with professional athletes. The term is oft used but little understood. We have operationalised the concept and have found that mental toughness can be used to predict performance in both sporting and occupational settings.
